OAL has wide experience in shipping and Admiralty practice. We have represented many clients in the last 30 years including government, private sector, etc. Our lawyers have advised major players in the Maritime industry, both in local and cross-border transactions, including negotiating terms and documentation issues. The firm provides services to multi-national companies in the oil and gas, and transport sectors.

We are publishers of Nigeria’s leading Maritime Journal and The Maritime Newsletter. Our senior partner in collaboration with the Lagos State Government established Nigeria’s Institute of Maritime Law, the first institution in Nigeria to offer the degrees at Masters and Doctors level.

OAL was engaged in the privatization process by the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) of Government entities of the Maritime sector such as the Nigerdock Dockyard. We advise regulatory agenices like NIMASA, NPA on safety, certification, quality issues and standards. In area of reforms, we drafted the Cabotage Act, the National Ocean Policy and Oceans Act.  We have rendered professional advisory services to Nigerian Maritime Authority (Now Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency) since 1995 on Port reform and control.

We advised the Federal Ministry of Transport on disposal of government vehicles, in its ports clearing exercise. We have provided several legal opinions, comments, and resource in Maritime sector reforms, on diverse matters including port state control, the Merchant Shipping Act, IMO regulations, and P& I matters.

To advance specialty knowledge in maritime practice, the firm supported the establishment of Institute of Maritime Law at the Lagos State University and provided the ad hoc staff that lectured in the institute. We are legal advisers to the Nigeria Chamber of Shipping and maintain advisory relations with Indigenous Ship owners and also set up the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping with our Senior Partner as the first President. Our firm assisted major banks in Nigeria to set up Maritime practice through customized in-house trainings of banks’ maritime desk personnel.
